As part of the summer 2009 celebrations, a temporary exhibition about the Burgess Shale will be shown at the Whyte Museum of the Rockies in Banff. This exhibit will consists of oversize panoramic photographs made by Walcott during his scientific investigations in the Canadian Rockies in the early 20th century. The panoramas are vintage prints (1909-1923) from original nitrate negatives, measuring 25 cm high and from 90 to 280 cm wide. Complementary materials include one of Walcott's handwritten daily journals (1909 and 1921) mentioning the discovery of the Burgess Shale. This exhibit will be complemented by some artefacts collected on the Burgess Shale by ROM crews. All the registered conference guests will be able to see the show during the conference, in particular at the Ice breaker.
We are also planning a public display of Burgess Shale artwork (drawings, paintings, videos, digital media), possibly linked to the above exhibit, and the unveiling of a plaque in honour of Walcott in Field, B.C., close to the original discovery site.
